and there it is.

according to the good folks at wikipedia, "smoke and mirrors" is:

"a metaphor for a deceptive, fraudulent...explanation or description. The source of the name is based on magicians' illusions, where magicians use smoke and mirrors to accomplish illusions such as making objects disappear, when they really don't disappear at all. The expression may have a connotation of virtuosity or cleverness in carrying out such a deception.... "smoke and mirrors" may refer to any sort of presentation by which the audience is intended to be deceived, such as an attempt to fool a prospective client into thinking that one has capabilities necessary to deliver a product in question."

while i'd hardly call fashion fraudulent, it does possess the unique ability to disguise our flaws, misgivings and insecurities and transport us beyond ourselves, as well as an illusory quality that allows us to take on a new role with each ensemble.

out of which comes smoke&mirrors apparel, selling vintage, original, and reconstructed clothes, shoes, jewelry, and other assorted wares. it's all coming very soon, but this blog, as abie puts it, will be up for "post[ing] news and our current projects... not only... what we make but what we are listening to, watching, eating, drinking, smelling..." it's all rather exciting, really.

"...Illusion. Mirrors and blue smoke, beautiful blue smoke rolling over the surface of highly polished mirrors, first a thin veil of blue smoke, then a thick cloud that suddenly dissolves into wisps of blue smoke, the mirrors catching it all, bouncing it back and forth." - jimmy breslin
